Copper Red and Tenmoku Vase

This vase has two glazes layered on top of each other: the traditional Tenmoku glaze and Copper Red.

The Tenmoku glaze breaks around the edges of the trimming marks to give a brown and black metallic sheen. The copper red, on the other hand, provides a glossy finish. Combined with the raw clay body that is exposed, the pot has a layered effect.

You can see black dots across the glazed area – these are the iron particles that come out to the surface. This happens only when the firing is done in a reducing atmosphere.
