Soda fired vase 01

3,200.00

This was fired in a soda kiln. The pots are initially decorated with a clay slip (the black band of coating at the shoulder of the pot). When the kiln reaches the peak temperature of cone 6, liquid soda ash is sprayed into the kiln. It then distributes throughout and randomly settles on the pots, creating the unique look. The pots are placed on the kiln with shells and clay wardings as props so that they don’t fuse with the kiln shelf during the firing process.

The soda effect is also known as the orange peel effect. As the soda ash settles on top of the clay slip, it creates a texture like orange peel. Here, you can see the colour of the slip break at the lip of the pot, which creates a blue tint.

The whole pot has a metallic sheen to it, and the texture varies from rough to shiny based on how the soda settled on the pot, creating a unique look.

In this pot, you will be able to see a flashing effect (orangish tone) as well as shell marks.

This pot is unglazed, so adding water is not recommended as the body has not vitrified.
